What makes a king?Currently I am reading a trilogy from Stephen R. Lawhead for fun. Lawheads work has been called reminiscent of C.S. Lewis by Liberty Journal. In the third book of the trilogy the main character reflects upon his awakening knowledge of what it means to be a king. He realizes a king's power, his sovereignty comes from his people. His is able to protect his kingdom and make it prosper because his people partner with him to do that. I do not want to say it is a analogy for the church and it's leadership, but there are similarities.
The pastor and ministerial staff of a church are dependent upon the laymen of their churches to make it prosper. Through their relationship and followship laymen enable the vision God has given a pastor for his local congregation. The pastor may be the most visible or seem to have the most influence in a church, but he is a servant leader and leads a church of volunteers who give, or do not give, themselves to God's purpose for their church.
I guess the question is rather "what makes a pastor?" At least in one way a pastor is made when a man of God leads or serves and group of Christians. If a church is to have a pastor they must give a certain fealty to him and pledge to follow and support him as he leads. What does a church have when they have a pastor, but do not follow and trust him. They might have a servant, true. But, they are leading themselves, following their own noses without a unified vision. As Southern Baptists we are not afraid of a little preisthood of the beleiver, however, we need a leader if the church is to prosper.
[edit] I forgot to add...
The main character in the book is chastized by his new queen when he seeks to lead the warparty sent to bring men who sabotaged their kingdom to justice and return a treasure stolen. She breaks his resolve by reminding him that if he is to be a king then he should act like a king. Chasing mere theives was below a high king, he has able warriors to do that. His place is to be about seeing to the wellbeing of his people and the rebuilding of his kingdom. The main point is acting like the king he is. Ministers must act as the ministers they claim to be. If a vision has been given, that vision should be followed and the sacrifices it calls for made. A minister should respond to objections not react to them. In all things he should be a man of God. |
